Waqf Bill: INDIA Bloc Engages in Debate, Pushes for Voting in Parliament

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, has triggered a heated debate in the Lok Sabha, with the opposition
INDIA bloc
strongly opposing the proposed amendments. The bill, introduced by the ruling party, aims to reform the management of
waqf properties
across the country, but critics argue it could lead to greater governmental control over religious endowments.
INDIA Bloc Demands Voting Instead of Voice Approval
During the parliamentary session, opposition leaders, including members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), demanded that the bill be put to
division voting
instead of being passed through a voice vote. MP
NK Premachandran
of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) stated, "The INDIA bloc is united in its stand against the bill and will ensure a proper voting process takes place."
Government Defends Bill, Calls for Modernization
On the other hand, the ruling party defended the bill, arguing that it was designed to
modernize waqf property administration
and prevent corruption. The government claimed the amendments would bring greater transparency in the registration and allocation of waqf properties.
Concerns from Religious Organizations
Several Muslim organizations, including the
All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB),
have raised concerns about the bill. They argue that the proposed changes could allow
increased government intervention
in waqf affairs, potentially threatening the autonomy of these institutions.
Voting Outcome to Be Crucial
With the NDA holding a numerical advantage in the Lok Sabha, the bill is likely to pass. However, the INDIA bloc has vowed to take the matter to the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling party does not have an absolute majority.
